As you will be aware Natural England is implementing coastal access around the English coast. Natural England plans to start on work five ‘new’ adjoining stretches of coast during 2012/13 and is keen to receive contact from people who may have a legal interest in the land which may be affected by our work. Clearly this will be of particular importance to those owning coastal land or having interests such as sporting rights.
Access is being implemented under the Marine and Coastal Access Act and will create a path with “associated spreading room” around the coast. Work is already underway on 6 stretches of the new England Coastal Path, in Dorset, the Durham area, Norfolk, Kent, Somerset and Cumbria. The Natural England website has the most up to date information and also has a link to some general coastal access FAQ’s on each stretch: www.naturalengland.org.uk/coastalaccess
In addition to working on these existing areas, Natural England also plans to start work on five ‘new’ adjoining stretches of coast during 2012/13: • Cumbria - Whitehaven to Silecroft • Dorset - Portland, Rufus Castle to Lyme Regis • Kent - Folkestone to Camber • Norfolk - Sea Palling to Hopton on Sea • Hartlepool - Hartlepool to Speeton
If you are concerned or wish to register a legal interest in land that may be affected then contact the relevant stretch team – details below. In due course the relevant team will make contact and discuss/assess what further contact may be appropriate. Contact details for the remaining two ‘new’ stretches will be circulated when they are ready. It is essential that all those affected get in touch with Natural England at the earliest opportunity.
