Welcome

Welcome to the April grass e-route.

We have several events planned in the coming months, and now that the show season is upon us the trade stand will be busy out and about in the region.

In addition to the county shows and point to points, the CA will be represented at three educational functions in the course of the coming month, starting with the Spring Fling at the Norwich showground and then two dedicated schools days, one in Suffolk and the other in Norfolk. The importance of educating the younger generation to the ways of the countryside cannot be underestimated and the CA plays a prominent part in these days.

Kate Hoey MP, our Chairman, has kindly agreed to come to speak at the drinks party at Elton Hall on Monday 23rd April. This promises to be a fantastic evening in a lovely setting, so please come along and support the event.

Regional Director, Eastern Region

Office of Fair Trading

'The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is asking people living and working in rural areas to contribute to a fact-finding study into the challenges facing consumers and businesses in remote communities across the UK. The OFT writes:

"As Alliance members will know, the prices of many goods and services are frequently higher in remote communities, there can be fewer suppliers available, and access to key services such as shops, dentists, chemists, banks and public transport can be limited. Fuel prices are a common cause for concern for those who need to travel long distances to get to school, to work or to the shops. And whilst shopping online may expand opportunities for broader choice and quality, deliveries to more isolated areas can sometimes be problematic or costly. The OFT is seeking to explore these and other issues with communities and businesses in remote areas, with the aim of improving its, and others', understanding of how consumer or competition law can help tackle them."

We encourage CA members and supporters to contribute to the study by sending their views before 20 April to the OFT Office in Scotland, 23 Walker Street, Edinburgh EH3 7HX, filling in an online form at www.oft.gov.uk/remcom, or emailing remotecommunities@oft.gsi.gov.uk

Please copy the Countryside Alliance into your responses as we are always keen to boost our campaigning work with case studies. Please email your thoughts to policy@countryside-alliance.org

Spring Magazine

The Spring 2012 membership magazine is now available to read online. This is a packed issue containing an exclusive article by the Prime Minister on his love of the countryside and his determination to protect it. We also examine her Majesty the Queen's love of the countryside on the occasion of her Diamond Jubilee, reveal the results of our National Shoot Survey, praise the fell hound and bring you seasonal sporting tips and a game recipe. This issue also contains our Annual Report which for the first time forms a part of the magazine itself instead of a separate document.

HM The Queen features on the cover of our Spring magazine

This year, in common with many other membership and campaigning organisations, we are offering members the chance to vote online. Members aged 17 and over are asked to vote to approve the Report and Accounts and to appoint Messrs Saffery Champness as Auditors. Tim Vestey has been elected unopposed to the Board and will take up his position at the AGM (to be held at The Union Jack Club, Sandell Street, London, SE1 8UJ at 2pm on Tuesday 12th June.)

Online voting is quick, simple and inexpensive. It can be done simply by visiting the website www.votebyinternet.com/ca12. All you need is your membership number and postcode (or country of residence if outside the UK). The website is available 24 hours a day until midnight on Tuesday 8th May 2012.

Full voting instructions and ballot forms can be found at the back of the Annual Report. Members are still able to cast postal votes as usual.

If you have any queries please contact our Membership Team on 020 7840 9300 or membership@countryside-alliance.org.

Amateur Photographic Competition

Take part in the Hunting under the Act photographic competition, which has been launched to mark the seventh anniversary of the Hunting Act. We are inviting all amateur photographers who support hunting to send in their hunting shots, taken since the Act came into force, for the chance for their photograph to grace the cover of our Autumn magazine – which goes out to over 105,000 people.

This photo competition will illustrate just how stoical the hunting community has been in rising to the challenge of hunting under the Act. We want a range of shots whether atmospheric, quirky or moving, to show the world that hunting is still here and will continue to thrive with the camaraderie and strength that the Hunting Act could not break. The winner will be announced on the 10th July.

Send in your photos of “Hunting under the Act” to news@countryside-alliance.org. The deadline is 25th June. Files must be 300dpi, high resolution jpegs of 3 or 4MB or more. If the winner is a landscape shot it will be used as a double page spread within the magazine. Copyright of images passes to the Countryside Alliance, but all future use will be credited

National Shooting Week: 2nd-10th June 2012

National Shooting Week will run from the 2nd-10th June. The weeklong event is aimed at people who have never experienced shooting before. During the week, participating shooting grounds and clubs give taster lessons to complete beginners who would like to give shooting a try.

Event organisers can now register by going to www.nationalshootingweek.co.uk. As an extra incentive, all grounds that sign up will receive free Countryside Alliance trade membership for one year. Now in its sixth year, National Shooting Week is organised by the Countryside Alliance in association with the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association.
