‘It’s my favourite time of year’ – Taesha Butt from Wookey, Somerset

loveofshootingI am a beater and have been beating on two local shoots for the last four years. I must say I have met some wonderful people; from businessmen, to farmers, countrymen, gamekeepers, computer technicians, builders, housewives and also children, whose proud fathers are keen to share this interest and lifestyle with them.

Out on a shoot, it is really a very special combination of people and while we would not normally come together, we would consider them our closest friends.

I began beating at a local shoot with my Mother and her gamekeeper partner for a bit of exercise and pocket money. My Mother introduced me to a young farmer by the name of Josh who had been beating with them the previous season. He taught me to shoot and I fell in love – not only with the sport – but with the young farmer too. Today we are married and have two children.

Although I am fairly new to the sport, I already completely understand how it brings communities together, and the feeling of acceptance and togetherness it brings each and every winter. It is my favourite time of year.

I am very much looking forward to beating for my fourth season this year and also for meeting up with everyone from the shoot – some of which came to our wedding!
