Your membership & our campaigns

Because of our members we have been able to do the following in the last year:

Hunting

  • Challenged the RSPCA on their prosecutions of farmers and hunts. We worked with a parliamentary committee which produced a report recommending that the RSPCA should leave prosecuting to the CPS.
  • Made the law easier for police officers to remove face coverings from hunt saboteurs and protesters. The law will come into force this year and will allow an officer to remove face coverings without prior written authorisation which they.
  • Proactively helped defend all potential hunt prosecutions, leading to no successful convictions.

Shooting and Conservation

  • Closing the Lead Ammunition Group, which threatened a ban on lead ammunition.
  • Leading the defence of grouse shooting and turning a parliamentary debate about banning grouse shooting into an opportunity to promote the value of shooting in the uplands.
  • Publicly exposing misinformation being shared by BBC presenters and animal rights organisations seeking to restrict your right to shoot.
  • Growing the game market through our Game to Eat campaign and helping to boost the value of the game meat market above £100 million for the first time.

Communities & Business

  • We led calls for a Universal Service Obligation for broadband internet which is now in the process of becoming law.
  • The Countryside Alliance Awards received a record number of nominations (over 7,000) recognising the great work being done by rural businesses across the country.
  • Organised the first ever Great British Game Food Festival to promote game meat.
  • Gave evidence to a Parliamentary Inquiry on rural tourism and worked with the Government to develop ways to boost tourism in rural areas.
  • Our Policing and Crime Commissioner Manifesto 2016 brought rural crime to the attention of Commissioners across the country.
  • Helped secure the future of the Land Registry by objecting to Government plans to privatise it.
  • Our ‘Sick of No Signal’ campaign was one of the first to raise the issue of mobile coverage in rural issues and we are still the main rural lobby group on this issue.

Fishing

Via our charity, The Countryside Alliance Foundation, we run a series of fantastic projects, including Fishing for Schools and Casting for Recovery UK & Ireland.

Fishing for Schools is an exciting project from The Countryside Alliance Foundation. We teach young people the unique skills of fly fishing and offer them a gateway into the natural world. Run by world famous angler Charles Jardine and his dedicated team, the mission is simple – to educate and enhance young lives. The programme offers a short-course for children, often with special educational needs, between the ages of 14 and 16 who often find academic work particularly difficult but respond well to alternative learning. The programme works with courses run by accredited ASDAN, COPE and NOCN schemes giving real qualifications and social value. The ASDAN Award Scheme operates in several thousand schools and other educational centres – it is listed as one of the few major routes for developing and accrediting wider key skills. The course contributes to the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness, which is a GCSE alternative for many children.
