Watch: Tim Bonner talks responsible use of rodenticides on Countryfile

Tim Bonner, Countryside Alliance Chief Executive was on Countryfile on Sunday 12 June responding to the accusation that dangerous poisons are being thrown around the countryside without proper care and are even being used to target birds of prey.

Tim responded by emphasising that the shooting industry is working hard to promote and ensure the responsible use of rodenticides.

He also acknowledged that second-generation rodenticides are extremely toxic, and due to the significant risks to non-target species, the poison must be used within appropriate lockable tamper-resistant bait stations, and it is essential to survey and remove bodies from the treatment area on a regular basis to prevent such incidents from occurring.

However, it is important from a public health perspective that we are able to control rats which now have high levels of resistance to first-generation rodenticides. But Tim was very clear that any misuse of rodenticides must be investigated by the police as we must learn lessons.

Second-generation rodenticides are readily available, even from Amazon, and we have to make absolutely sure that everyone who uses them, whether farmer, smallholder, gamekeeper and conservationist is trained properly in their use.

There are already over 1200 gamekeepers who have been through this training and we must make sure that continues.
