As another school year came to a close, our coaching team finished the term on a high, delivering memorable Fishing for Schools sessions to young people across the country. From kick sampling to friendly fishing competitions, every session offered new opportunities to learn, explore and grow.
So far this year, we have reached over 30 schools across 13 counties - delivering over 100 sessions and creating lasting memories for the young people involved.
In Kent, our coaching team has supported pupils in areas including Maidstone, Malling, Ramsgate and Canterbury - helping develop angling skills and sparking what we hope will be a lifelong interest in the sport.
One student's reflection from a session introducing angling to a school in Eltham, south-east London, perfectly illustrates how the skills developed through angling can be applied far beyond the waterside:: "I learned to be patient and not give up when things didn’t happen straight away."
The warm weather meant several sessions had to be rescheduled during the summer term. A huge thank you to our coaching team and partner schools for their flexibility and commitment to ensuring pupils didn't miss out.
Over in Bristol, New Horizons Learning Centre threw themselves into the programme. Our sessions counted towards their Duke of Edinburgh Award skills section and supported their alternative curriculum programme.
Meanwhile, in Wiltshire, pupils at Sutton Veny Primary School - one of our newest Fishing for Schools partners - aced their sessions. From discovering the tiny creatures that call the River Wylye home, to mastering new fishing skills and competing in their very own Fishing World Cup, it was a thoughtful programme of sessions packed with learning, teamwork and plenty of excitement.
While summer offers a moment to take stock and look ahead, it’s far from quiet. We’re using this time to finalise plans for autumn delivery in Wales, Northern Ireland, Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire, Herefordshire and Sussex — and we are also preparing to deliver ‘one-off’ sessions over the summer holidays, including work with Choice Support, a charity supporting adults with autism and learning difficulties in Kent.
