Creating meaningful and memorable experiences is at the heart of life at Wittersham Church of England Primary School. Through their involvement in the Fishing for Schools, pupils have had the chance to try something new, spend time outdoors, and grow in confidence along the way.

In this blog, the school shares its experience of the programme and the difference it has made to their pupils.

This year, we have been delighted to continue offering our pupils the opportunity to take part in Fishing for Schools sessions. These sessions have quickly become a much-loved part of our enrichment offer, providing children with a unique chance to learn new skills, spend time outdoors, and experience the calm and focus that fishing can bring.

Through the Fishing for Schools programme, pupils in Key Stage 2 have been introduced to the fundamentals of angling in a safe and supportive environment. Many of our children had never held a fishing rod before, so the sessions have been a fantastic way to build confidence and curiosity while learning something completely new.

One of the most valuable aspects of the programme is how it connects children with the natural environment. Spending time by the water encourages pupils to slow down, observe nature, and develop patience and perseverance. These are qualities that are not only important in fishing but also in learning and life more broadly.

The sessions have also provided opportunities for pupils to develop teamwork and communication skills. Children have enjoyed sharing their successes, encouraging one another, and celebrating each other’s catches. For some pupils, the peaceful setting and hands-on learning have been particularly beneficial for their wellbeing.

We are especially grateful that our own Mr Hawkins has now trained as a fishing coach, which allows us to extend these opportunities even further. Thanks to partnerships with local fisheries and the Fishing for Schools programme, we are able to offer pupils experiences that many would not otherwise have access to.

At Wittersham Church of England Primary School, we are always looking for ways to broaden children’s horizons and provide meaningful, memorable experiences. Fishing for Schools has certainly done just that, and we look forward to continuing the programme in the future so that even more pupils can discover the enjoyment and benefits of fishing.
