Last weekend, friends and fellow hunting enthusiasts from across the UK, Ireland and even Australia gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone as Henry Persse marked his 100th birthday.

Born in Ireland on 26 June 1926, Henry's life has been shaped by a love of horses, hounds and the traditions of the countryside. Growing up in a large family, he was raised in a household where horses were very much part of everyday life. It was little surprise that hunting became a lifelong passion.

As a young man, Henry hunted with both the Kilmoganny Harriers and the Kilkenny Foxhounds, immersing himself in the rich hunting culture of Ireland. Horses and country sports ran through the family and continues to this day.

In the early 1960s, Henry moved to Britain, where his commitment to the hunting community has also been reflected through his support of his son, Bill Persse, who runs The Hunting Shop. Over the years, Henry has been a constant source of encouragement and support to the business, which has become a well-known and valued part of the hunting world. Serving hunts, followers and supporters across the country, The Hunting Shop has become an important shop for the hunting community, and Henry's enthusiasm and dedication have played a significant role in its success.

Henry's connection to hunting history runs even deeper. He is a descendant of Burton Persse, founder of the famous County Galway Hunt, widely known as the Galway Blazers, one of Ireland's most celebrated hunting packs.

A recently discovered Persse Lodge Hunt silver button has been found and was taken to Henry’s party at the weekend.

Saturday's celebrations brought together friends from far and wide, reflecting the respect and affection in which Henry is held. The Llangeinor Pentyrch hounds, with Huntsman Sean Watts and Whipper-In Gavin Merkel in full uniform attended and guests travelled from far and wide for a fitting tribute to a man whose life has been intertwined with the hunting community for a century.

“Henry’s remarkable milestone is not only a celebration of a century well lived, but also of a lifetime dedicated to hunting and the community that surrounds it,” recognised Polly Portwin, Director of the Campaign for Hunting at the Countryside Alliance.

“Throughout his 100 years, hunting (and vintage cars) has provided friendship, purpose and a connection to generations of like-minded people, and Henry’s story is a wonderful reminder of the enduring bonds that it creates. We wish Henry a very happy 100th birthday and thank him for his unwavering support of hunting, hounds and the traditions and values that continue to bring rural communities together.”
