When the hunting season comes to an end, you might expect things to slow down – but for many hunt followers and their horses, summer is when the action really begins. Across the country, teams are already gearing up for the ever-popular inter-hunt relay competitions, bringing a fresh wave of excitement to the off-season calendar, with entries now open for the Game Fair inter-hunt relay taking place on Sunday, 26 July.

Fast, competitive and hugely entertaining, these team relay events see two squads of three or four riders go head-to-head over identical mirror-image courses in a race against the clock. Most competitions run on a knock-out basis, with the winning teams progressing through the rounds as the pressure – and usually the fences – get bigger. By the semi-finals, courses are often more technical, demanding quick thinking as well as bold riding.

And it is not just about speed. Riders must tackle a variety of challenges along the way, from opening and shutting gates to weaving through bending poles, while some relays even include crowd-pleasing tasks such as carrying a full glass of port without spilling a drop. Add in penalties for knocked fences or mistakes, and precision becomes just as important as pace.

Throughout the summer, hunts are busy holding training sessions and team trials as they prepare for some of the season’s standout fixtures. Alongside the friendly rivalry and atmosphere, many competitions also offer prize money which helps support the hunts themselves.

What makes inter-hunt relays so enjoyable is the team spirit involved. Even the most relaxed hunt supporter can suddenly become fiercely competitive once they are charging into the arena with baton in hand. That said, it is important that everyone involved – both mounted and on foot  – remembers they are representing not only their own hunt, but also the wider hunting community. Good horsemanship, sportsmanship and the highest standards of animal welfare should always remain front and centre.

For spectators, these events offer a brilliant showcase of the skill, teamwork and camaraderie that exist within the hunting world, making them one of the highlights of the summer countryside calendar.

Below we have highlighted one of this summer’s key inter-hunt relays, and we strongly recommend getting entries in early to avoid disappointment. If you know of any other relays taking place this season, do let us know so we can include them in our listings.
