Fishing for Schools Programme expands to five schools in Northern Ireland

The Countryside Alliance Ireland, in partnership with the Ulster Angling Federation (UAF), is delighted to announce the expansion of The Countryside Alliance Foundation’s Fishing for Schools programme across Northern Ireland. This pioneering initiative uses angling as an engaging tool for outdoor learning, giving young people aged 10–16 the opportunity to connect with nature while exploring key subjects such as science, maths, geography, and environmental studies.

This year, the programme has grown significantly, now including five schools across Northern Ireland. Students have been taking part in practical, hands-on angling activities guided by experienced UAF coaches. Under their expert supervision, young participants are learning essential skills such as casting, baiting, and fish identification, as well as understanding the delicate balance of aquatic ecosystems. These lessons take place in calm, natural surroundings, providing a space for mindfulness, focus, and personal reflection—benefits that extend far beyond the classroom.

Fishing for Schools was first established in 2007 and has since transformed the educational experience for thousands of children across the UK. By combining practical angling skills with academic learning, the programme helps to develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Its expansion into Northern Ireland represents an exciting milestone, reflecting both the growing interest in angling and the programme’s proven ability to enrich the lives of young people.

Gary McCartney, Director of Countryside Alliance Ireland, said:

"I'm absolutely thrilled with the programme’s growth here in Northern Ireland. Through our partnership with the UAF, we’re educating young people through fishing and opening up opportunities through the many skills that angling has to offer."

The Countryside Alliance Foundation is now inviting donations to help further expand Fishing for Schools in Northern Ireland. Contributions will allow even more schools to participate, giving additional young people the chance to experience the joys of fishing, develop practical outdoor skills, and build a lifelong appreciation for the natural environment.
