The Labour Rural Research Group (LRRG) has launched a new call for evidence to inform its next major report on the future of the rural economy.

Building on its previous report, Understanding Rural Britain and Rural Poverty in Britain, this latest study will examine the current state of the rural economy, including the industries that underpin it, the challenges facing rural businesses and the policy environment shaping growth.

Looking ahead to 2040, the report will take a forward-looking approach, with a particular focus on the actions needed during the current Parliament to unlock long-term growth, resilience and opportunity in rural areas.

Rural Britain plays a vital role in the UK’s economic, social and environmental success. Home to a highly skilled workforce, distinctive industries and deep-rooted expertise, these areas hold significant untapped potential. However, structural barriers continue to limit their ability to grow, scale and attract investment.

The LRRG is therefore inviting businesses, organisations and individuals to share their experiences of operating in rural areas, including the opportunities and challenges they face.

Responding to the call, Sarah Lee, Director of Policy and Campaigns at the Countryside Alliance said said:

“It is vital that the real experiences of rural businesses are heard and understood by policymakers. Too often, rural economies are viewed through an urban lens, overlooking both the challenges and the enormous opportunities that exist. This call for evidence is an important opportunity to highlight what is needed to unlock growth, support enterprise and ensure rural communities can thrive long into the future.”

By gathering evidence directly from those on the ground, the group aims to ensure its recommendations reflect the realities of rural life and business and to help shape policies that enable rural economies to thrive.

Those wishing to contribute can find further information and submit evidence via the LRRG website.
