Judge’s comments: “Greg and Steve have made the Dambusters the beating heart of the village through their dedication to supporting locally brewed real ales, serving local produce, but also giving something back to the community. Greg can often be found clearing the weeds around the war graves on his day off. With their wonderful collection of memorabilia of the 617 Squadron, their very own micro-brewery all in a dog friendly atmosphere all makes the Dambusters a winning combination.”



The New Inn

Judge’s comments: “Rob and his staff at the New Inn always go the extra mile in making this pub the hub of this rural community. From fundraising and community events to running customers home if they inadvertently have had too good a time. Their principles are quite clear - a friendly welcome with great food and drink ensures their customers leave happy and return time after time.”


North East

The Cook and Barker

Newton-on-the-Moor, Northumberland NE65 9JJ

Judge’s comments: “The Cook and Barker has grown under the ownership of Phil Farmer from a simple bar to the enterprise it is today, which is dedicated to serving good food, drink and accommodation while still acting as a community hub. Food is also Phil’s passion, so much so that he has bought a farm so he can provide top quality local produce for the pub and he is always on the lookout for other local suppliers to support.”


North West

The Inn at Whitewell

Dunsop Road, Whitewell, Clitheroe, Lancashire BB7 3AT

Judge’s comments: The pub really does feel like home when you walk in, with open fires, dogs lying down after long walks and friendly staff throughout. It is the only community space for miles around and takes its role as custodian of the area very seriously. They are even spearheading a revolutionary broadband scheme for their parish and four others, which will be the biggest development for the area since electricity. Not only do they produce their own preserves, jam, herbs, bread, grow their own apples, plums and rhubarb, but they support nearby farms by purchasing their lamb and beef and local fabric designers and wallpaper creators by using them throughout the Inn and their rooms and the Piggery.”

South East

The Plough

Judge’s comments: The Plough Inn is the quintessential English pub and is the beating heart of this community. Jo and her team work tirelessly to continually bring the community together through organising events and hosting charity fundraisers. From sponsored dog walks, sloe gin competitions to quiz nights Jo has raised nearly 100k for charity over the last nine years. There are not many proper old country pubs with great food and well-kept beers around and this is definitely one of the best.


South West

The Exmoor White Horse Inn

Judge’s comments: “This Inn plays an important part in promoting the area, interests that support the local economy, and ventures that abound in and around Exmoor and beyond. The Inn is a welcoming place for both locals and visitors and is a true beacon of rural hospitality and enterprise.”



The Iorwerth Arms

Judge’s comments: “The Iorwerth Arms is a community led enterprise which evolved from a failed bid by developers to purchase the last businesses in the village. The pub has re-opened and is proving to be sustainable ensuring a future for the pub and indeed the community. A recently modernised well equipped kitchen has put them in good stead to continue with their plans to offer local food. Future plans for the pub include the renovation of a barn to house a village shop, hairdressers and a butchers, completely rejuvenating the village.”



The Blacksmith's Arms

Anserdale Lane, Lastingham, York YO62 6TN

Judge’s comments: “The Blacksmith’s Arms is an old-fashioned country pub, where everyone is welcome. There are only 60 people living permanently in Lastingham but the pub is busy, with visitors and people from the surrounding area and all 60 locals. Food in the restaurant comes from local farms and shoots, with game tasting nights and gourmet nights popular events. If you run out of milk or eggs, you can just pop into the pub and Peter will find some from the kitchen and their frozen pies are a big hit with holiday makers.”
