In mid June, Fishing for Schools coach Warren White was privileged to attend a graduation of Choice Support Students at a celebration hosted at the Ken Boyce Centre, based in Footscray, Kent.
Warren had no idea what to expect but immediately was warmly welcomed into an evening – and one which turned out to be truly moving.
The graduates, all clients of Choice Support, arrived dressed for the occasion—caps, gowns, and proud smiles—even in the sweltering June heat.
One by one, they were called up to receive their certificates, celebrating achievements ranging from woodwork and the arts to simply growing in confidence. For many of the individuals, the night marked personal milestones that were deeply meaningful.
The newly appointed Mayor of the London Borough of Bexley was also in attendance. As she made her way around the room, she stopped at Warren’s table and asked about his involvement. As a teacher of 43 years, the Mayor immediately understood the impact.
Midway through the evening, as music filled the hall and a disco got underway, everything paused for a surprise “thank-you”. Karen, a senior member of staff, took to the microphone to share how much the group had enjoyed the fishing sessions delivered by Warren and the Fishing for Schools team, and also, enthusiastically, getting involved in the art competition.
We are incredibly proud of the work of Warren and our team of coaches does; and It was a touching reminder of what Fishing for Schools is all about—creating moments of joy, learning, and achievement for young people and adults alike.
Choice Support are a truly special group of young adults, with amazing staff and volunteers.
