When the hunting season draws to a close, the attention for most packs turns to preparations for their own puppy show and to the many competitive hound shows that take place around the country.

Hound shows are where the finest of each pack’s hounds compete against other in specific classes in order to assess their conformation as well as their quality, movement and balance. Dog hounds and bitch hounds are judged separately and there are contests for unentered hounds (which will start hunting this season), entered hounds (already hunting), and hounds used for breeding. Each show will also select an overall champion dog hound and bitch.

There are a range of shows throughout the calendar which have a variety of classes for all types of hounds including registered Studbook foxhounds, beagles, basset hounds, fell hounds, staghounds, Welsh hounds, minkhounds, draghounds and bloodhounds. The judging is normally undertaken by two current or former Masters.
