Keeping your dog calm during fireworks displays

It is a well-known fact that many pets struggle with the loud noise and disruption caused by fireworks displays. With the season of fireworks displays upon us, we wanted to share some top tips on how to encourage a calming environment at home for your pets.

Local and regional press outlets have been hot on the topic this week, sharing their own tips to readers. Take a look at these pointers published this week:

  • Gently familiarise your pet with loud bangs. This will prepare them for the noise over the weekend and can also be a longer-term solution.
  • Take your dog for walks during the day so that you are not outside when fireworks are being set off.
  • Distract your pet with the four T's on Bonfire Night; treats, tricks, toys and touch are some of the best ways to keep your pets calm during the fireworks.
  • Try not to leave your pets alone if you know there are planned fireworks.

Other things you can do to encourage a calm environment include:

  • Turning on the TV or listening to the radio. This will help to drown out any noise from outside.
  • Keeping your house as soundproof as possible. One of the ways you can do this is by closing curtains and blinds to muffle the sound of any loud bangs. This will also hide the flashes of light caused by fireworks, that could shine through the window.

It is also important to note that your pets should be microchipped and that their microchip details should be up to date. In the worst case scenario, if your pet gets out or runs away whilst fireworks are going off, you can be reunited more easily thanks to the microchip.
