Post Offices deserve more than recognition

On the day following the incredible Countryside Alliance Awards reception at the Senedd, it was encouraging to see Paul Davies MS use one of the first opportunities of the new Senedd term to raise the importance of post offices and the vital role they continue to play in communities across Wales.
Describing them as "small businesses with a big community impact", Mr Davies highlighted a reality that will resonate with anyone living in rural Wales. Post offices are far more than places to send parcels or buy stamps. They provide access to banking, government services, bill payments and cash withdrawals, while often acting as the heartbeat of the communities they serve.
In response, the Deputy First Minister, Sioned Williams AS, acknowledged that responsibility for the Post Office rests with the UK government. However, she also recognised the important role post offices play in maintaining access to cash and banking services and confirmed that the Welsh government would continue to champion their importance in discussions with the Post Office. She also pointed to town centre regeneration as one way the Welsh government can help support the long-term viability of these community services.
The debate in Cardiff Bay reflects a growing recognition across government that the future of the Post Office network must remain a national priority. Last year, the UK government published its long-awaited Post Office Green Paper, setting out proposals to secure the long-term sustainability of the network. The Countryside Alliance welcomed the consultation and responded in full, highlighting the unique role that rural post offices play in supporting communities, local businesses and those who would otherwise struggle to access essential services.
The Green Paper rightly recognised that the strength of the network depends on the people who run it. Commitments to strengthen the voice of postmasters, invest in the future of the network and keep post offices at the heart of local communities are all welcome. However, recognition alone will not secure the future of rural post offices. These ambitions must now be translated into meaningful action that gives postmasters and postmistresses the confidence to invest, innovate and continue serving the communities that rely on them every day.
Post offices are often the first doors to open in the morning and the last to close at night. Whether helping someone access their pension, supporting a local business with its banking or simply checking in on a regular customer, the contribution of postmasters and postmistresses extends far beyond the counter.
It is exactly this commitment that the Countryside Alliance seeks to celebrate through its annual Awards. Every year, we recognise outstanding rural businesses, and our Village Shop/Post Office category consistently showcases the dedication, resilience and community spirit of postmasters and postmistresses across Wales. These are people who quietly keep communities connected, often without the recognition they deserve.
Celebrating these local champions is about more than honouring individual success. It is about recognising the vital role they play in sustaining rural life and reminding decision-makers that once these services are lost, they are incredibly difficult to replace.
If we are serious about building resilient rural communities, we must do more than acknowledge the importance of post offices. We must support the people behind the counter who keep them alive. While policymakers in both Cardiff Bay and Westminster increasingly recognise the value of the Post Office network, the Countryside Alliance Awards shine a light on the individuals whose dedication makes those services possible every day. They are not simply providing a service; they are helping hold communities together, and that is something worth celebrating, protecting and investing in for generations to come.
