Scottish Countryside Alliance launches 2026 Scottish Parliamentary Election Manifesto

25 February, 2026

As we look ahead to the Scottish Parliamentary Elections taking place later this year, the Scottish Countryside Alliance has published a manifesto setting out how the next Scottish government can better support rural communities and reconnect positively with rural voters.

The message is clear - the current government has lost the trust of our rural communities and this disconnect must be fixed. Legislation must be balanced so that rural viewpoints are not disregarded in favour of central belt politics. All future policy, from tackling crime to land management, must be balanced, based on sound evidence, respect the views of communities and be rural-proofed.

We set out four key asks for the next government based on feedback we received from our members and supporters.

Protect Scotland’s rural way of life and rich heritage

With more than 354 landscape types, 90% of the UK’s highest mountain habitat and over 790 islands, Scotland’s land management practices must integrate both traditional and more modern regeneration practices, including rewilding. We need a balanced approach to managing our landscapes - one that draws on the latest evidence and ensures local communities are actively involved in the decision-making process.

Connect rural Scotland

Rural communities face rapid change, from energy infrastructure to digital connectivity and transport challenges. Ensuring that Scotland’s countryside is connected, resilient and able to benefit from these developments is essential for thriving communities, sustainable economic growth and quality of life.

Grow the rural economy by investing in local businesses

A thriving rural community is vital to Scotland’s food production, environment and communities. Local, independent businesses are the backbone of rural life. Supporting them sustains the rural economy, encourages visitors and helps prevent rural depopulation.

Support our countryside with rural-proofed policies

Rural-proofed policies are essential if rural communities are to feel supported and able to thrive. From policing and public services to housing and education, government must ensure rural Scotland is not treated as an afterthought.
