Hunting Newcomers' Week dates revealed with new competition

A new competition is being launched by the Countryside Alliance (CA) to coincide with their annual hunting Newcomers' Week which will take place from 21-28 October.

The aim of the week is to introduce as many new faces to the hunting field as possible with the added incentive this year of a competition that encourages those who have enjoyed their day out with hounds to write about their encounter.

"We want to hear your stories about the reasons you decided to try hunting for the first time and what that experience meant for you," explained the CA's Head of Hunting, Polly Portwin. "Details about any packs that made newcomers feel particularly welcome, people that made a difference to your enjoyment of the day and whether the impression it has made on you has given you the incentive to go out another time, are just some examples of what we are looking forward to hearing about and then sharing with others who are considering taking up hunting."

Hunts generally welcome newcomers throughout the year, however it can be a daunting prospect particularly if you haven't been before or have perhaps moved areas and had a break since you last went out. Both mounted and foot packs are being encouraged by the Countryside Alliance to either host a specific meet for newcomers or to organise an activity such as a tour of the kennels during the designated week to give everybody an opportunity to get involved with their local pack.

Prizes are being awarded in six different regions with Champagne Pol Roger generously offering a bottle of champagne to the writer of the winning article in each region, plus they will receive a personalised hunting stock donated by The Old Hunting Habit. In addition, a bottle of Pol Roger will go to the huntsman of the pack they visited (please note that for any winners under 18 years of age an alternative prize will be given).

"We are incredibly grateful to both Champagne Pol Roger and The Old Hunting Habit for supporting this new initiative and helping to encourage newcomers to hunting," continued Polly Portwin. "By welcoming new supporters and educating those who want to learn more about our activities in the countryside, we will ensure that hunting continues to thrive."

No special clothes or kit are required to be able to take part, however those thinking of trying hunting for the first time are encouraged to read the Countryside Alliance's Newcomers' Guide To Hunting which is available on PDF to download.
