Assembly Members enjoy a taste of delicious Welsh Game

Assembly Members from all parties showed their support for fabulous Welsh Game at a special event held at the Pierhead Cardiff Bay on Wednesday 22 October.

The event held by the Countryside Alliance's Game-to-Eat campaign was hosted by S4C chef Dudley Newbury (pictured) who demonstrated how quick and easy it is to cook game and how easily adapted game is to modern day recipes. On the menu was red pheasant curry followed by the classic duck a l'orange.

The audience, who were fed delicious game canapes throughout the evening prepared by Charlton House caterers, was made up of Assembly Members and a very varied group of the general public.

Restaurateurs, gundog trainers, chef's, shoot owners, game dealers and members of the Women's Institute, not forgetting the lady who uses pheasant feathers for brooches and masks, left with bags of recipes and a limited edition Welsh Game Relish, produced specifically for the event by Chef on the Run, based in Hay on Wye.

Rachel Evans, Countryside Alliance director for Wales, said: "It was a superb evening celebrating local produce that gets little or no promotion here in Wales. Game is very versatile, with low food miles, it's free range and healthy. It is in plentiful supply at this time of year and can be used in so many different ways.

"Shooting is worth 75million to the economy in Wales and provides around 2,400 jobs, 490 of which are directly in conservation work.

"Eating game is becoming increasingly popular yet we have very little in means of promotion. Game-to-Eat is the flagship campaign for game here in Wales and I welcome any opportunity to promote it."

The event was sponsored by Llyr Gruffydd AM (Plaid Cymru) Joyce Watson AM (Labour) William Powell AM (Welsh Liberal Democrats) and Russell George (Conservative). The game was sponsored by the Rhug Estate, Corwen and Dragon Game and Gundogs, Brecon. The event was also supported by the National Gamekeepers Organisation and was attended by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust.
