Home Office advises GPs to deprioritise providing medical information for firearms licencing

On 12th December 2021 the Prime Minister launched the Omicron Emergency Boost, a national mission for every eligible adult over 18 to be offered a booster vaccine by 31 December. Delivering this accelerated booster programme presents a huge challenge for the NHS and they have been asked to prioritise vaccinations and emergency care for the rest of the year.

As a result of this, GPs have been advised by the Home Office to deprioritise providing medical information for firearms licensing for the next four weeks while the continuation of the vaccine roll-out is at a critical stage. This means it may take around four weeks longer for doctors to respond with the necessary information to support a firearm or shotgun application.

To help ease this pressure on the NHS, we recommend using MedCert, a group of private GPs who are not under the same pressures as their NHS colleagues, and who are accepted by every police force. MedCert charges £50 for the service, and we have negotiated a 10% discount for Alliance members.
