about this blogRead moreThe Essex & Suffolk Hunt has recently launched a hunting-themed "recipe book with a twist" called Covert to Covers which contains over 150 recipes supplied by the hunt's members, subscribers and farmers.
With the majority of hunt fundraising events – including the hunt's Easter point to point at Higham - being cancelled due to coronavirus restrictions, supporters of the pack kennelled in Layham in Suffolk, were looking for alternative ways to raise funds during lockdown.
"The idea for a recipe book was born from the need to raise funds with inspiration from new recipes being circulated during lockdown via a chain email and a desire to encourage people to cook for the good of their health and for fun too," explained joint-master Bridget Chamberlain. "We sent out a request for contributions for a variety of categories including family favourites, chocolate recipes, five-minute meals and hip flask recipes, and were not disappointed – the response was fantastic."
"The editor has taken a fairly liberal interpretation of the word 'recipe'," continued Bridget. "As in the title, there is a play on words throughout and the spaces between recipes have been filled with quotes and sketches by the well-known artist Freddie Paske and the young followers of the Essex & Suffolk Hunt."
Polly Portwin, Head of Hunting at the Countryside Alliance praised those involved: "The Essex & Suffolk's lockdown creation is a masterpiece - it is full of fascinating recipes for cooks of all abilities and features some unusual touches which aren't to be missed. Not only will the book raise important funds for the hunt but this is yet another example of hunt supporters uniting during these difficult times."
The 126-page book has been described as "being the perfect Christmas present, especially for those 'hard to get for' people," and is available for £15 (plus £5p&P). For further details and an order form, please contact: [email protected]
