about this blogRead moreThe Countryside Alliance has welcomed news that the prestigious and hugely popular hound show fondly known as “Peterborough” will take place at its usual home, the East of England Showground again this year.
The Peterborough Royal Foxhound Show and the Festival of Hounds - formerly known as the Festival of Hunting – returns to the showground on Wednesday, 17th July, with plans afoot for a new venue in 2025. In news last year it was revealed that a major new development was planned for the showground and relocation was required, however, the East of England Showground Society has now confirmed that it will be possible to continue at the existing site for another year.
Alison Queenborough, Secretary to the Peterborough Royal Foxhound Show Society (PRFSS) explained:
“Given that the existing facilities at the Peterborough Showground are still in place, including the covered foxhound ring and kennels, which were purpose built for use by the Peterborough Royal Foxhound Show, the PRFSS General Committee feel that it is better placed to continue to host the Festival of Hounds at this existing venue whilst the agricultural society can still host the event.”
Polly Portwin, Director of the Campaign for Hunting at the Alliance said:
“The new name, the Festival of Hounds, recognises the importance of all types of hounds and we are delighted to continue our long-term support as a key sponsor. The Alliance remains committed to protecting the future of all lawful hunting activities and looks forward to welcoming our members and supporters back to the showground for a day which is the highlight of the summer hunting calendar for so many people who follow hounds.”
As well as the modern and Old English foxhound classes, championships at the Festival of Hounds will also contested by beagles, harriers and basset hounds, making it one of the largest shows of working scent hounds anywhere in the world. With a vast array of other events including the hotly-contested inter-hunt relay competition, plus trade stands, different hound displays, refreshments and a bar, there is plenty for all hunt supporters to enjoy.
