Successful day's fishing for BTEC fisheries students

The young men from Rowhill School, who are studying for a BTEC fishery qualification, were at Shorne Country Park on 7 February, as their usual fishery is being renovated. It was a successful session for these keen young anglers.

Fishing for Schools Kent instructor Warren White, writes: "Rowhill school was at Shorne Country Park, near Gravesend. Normally we would be at Grove Farm, Hadlow College, but the fishery has on going work to the fishery lodge, so for the second week we had a change of venue.

"Shorne CP is one of the TWAPS angling club's waters and we are very grateful for them allowing us to use their facilities.This is a great water for teaching young people to fish, as it has an abundance of silver fish, carp, crucian carp and tench. Also on the site of the country park is a Eco building which includes a cafe.

"Last week we arrived to find the two lakes frozen, but this week the weather was more mild, although first thing the wind was very strong and cold.

"We chose a nice big swim that was sheltered from the wind and had the wind off our back, which made it comfortable to fish and made the presentation of the float, spot on.

"Today was just about seeing if we could catch a fish so we rigged up a couple of Whips, a 4m and 5m. We feed maggot little and often with one maggot on the hook.

"It was not long before we had our first Roach on the 5M Whip and as normally happens the 5m whip seemed to be catching all the fish, it was either that method was in exactly the right place or being a 5m whip it was just that bit more off the bank, how many times have you fished next door to another angler using exactly the same method , but only one of you is catching.

"In between fishing the lads went up to the Cafe for a warm up and we got some fishing worksheets done.The fishing was not easy but patience and feeding correctly paid off and we ended with around 20 roach.In my view there is nothing better then a hard winter's day fishing when you know it is going to be hard and you really have to try everything just to get a bite. Well done boys for sticking to it!"
