This week (12–18 May 2025) is Mental Health Awareness Week, led by the Mental Health Foundation. The theme this year is community — something that plays a vital role in young people’s mental health and wellbeing.
At Fishing for Schools, we have seen first-hand how being part of a supportive, positive community can help pupils thrive. In this blog, Three Ways School shares how the fishing community — and their experience with Fishing for Schools— has made a lasting difference.

Three Ways School in Bath is a Single Academy Trust, operating as a generic Community Special School. At Three Ways School we want our curriculum to be meaningful and functional. We work hard as a team to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils as they go on their educational journey. We want to inspire a love of learning in our pupils and inject a sense of fun and positivity in our school environment through a close knit, family style community. Our team of staff and therapists offer a wide level of expertise, enhanced by excellent facilities and resources.
One of the resources we have used over the last 12 years is Fishing for Schools. Our students access sessions in the community, learning new skills and embracing the calm, tranquil setting fishing offers. Being part of a safe, positive community is vital for our students mental health and wellbeing. They thrive when they have strong connections with other people and supportive communities; the fishing community, supported by F4S has provided this.
Accessing our sessions with the Fishing for Schools coaches can provide a sense of belonging, safety, and give our students a sense of purpose and achievement. We believe in a holistic approach to learning and work closely with the F4S coaches to ensure “access to achievement” for all.
The best part about the sessions is the feedback from the students who are often surprised at how much they enjoyed the setting and the peace and quiet, as well as the excitement of catching fish together! What better way to enjoy a day out and support your mental health at the same time.
